Badminton: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy advance to Round of 16 in Asia Championships

India’s ace shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy reached the Round of 16 in 2024 Badminton Asia Championships on April 10 after winning their opening matches. The tournament is being played in Ningbo, China. Sindhu defeated Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei 18-21, 21-14, 21-19 in a hard fought victory while Prannoy overcame Lu Guang Zu of China 17-21, 23-21, 23-21.

Both the players had to work hard for their victory, with Sindhu almost losing the game in the third game after letting go a five-point lead. After losing the first game 17-21, the two-time Olympic medallist showed her class in the second game and won it easily by a lead of seven points.

In the third and final game, Sindhu struggled once again but kept her nerves to eventually win the match. She will next play against China’s Han Yue in the Round of 16 on Thursday, April 11.

As for Prannoy, he too struggled to get going in the first game and lost it by four points. He was on the verge of losing the second game after squandering a five-point lead but managed to force the decider. In the third game, Prannoy came back from behind after being down 5-11 to eventually win the game and the match.

He’ll next play against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi in the next round. Prannoy, who is seventh seed in the tournament, has already faced four first-round exits this year.

Among others, Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth were also shown the exit door after losing their opening round match. Sen was beaten by top seed Chinese player Shi Yu Qi 19-21, 15-21 while Srikanth lost to Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting Sisuka 14-21, 13-21.
