WATCH: Fans greet Virat Kohli as Rohit Sharma-led India reach New Delhi after T20 WC triumph

After the historic T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Team India was stuck in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl and reached New Delhi on Thursday morning (July 4). Rohit Sharma-led Indian team returned to the homeland after winning the just-concluded 20-nation T20 WC, held in West Indies and the USA, by beating South Africa by 7 runs in an epic final on June 29 at the Kensington Oval, Barbados. A special flight was arranged by the BCCI, also comprising the stranded Indian journalists, to take their players home. On return, local boy Virat Kohli was greeted by fans at the airport.

Speaking of Kohli, the 35-year-old didn’t have a great run in the T20 WC. He, however, ended his poor run of form in the final, scoring an impressive 59-ball 76 to help India post 176-7 after opting to bat first. In reply, Hardik Pandya’s 3 for 20 and two scalps each from Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh helped the Men in Blue restrict Aiden Markram-led Proteas for 169-8 to win by 7 runs.

Team India has a packed schedule on Thursday after reaching New Delhi. They will head to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving for Mumbai, where there is a victory parade arranged. In this regard, the Indian captain Rohit had a special message for the fans.

On Wednesday (June 3), Rohit wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “we want to enjoy this special moment with all of you. So let’s celebrate this win with a victory parade at Marine Drive & Wankhede on July 4th from 5:00pm onwards.”

India won the T20 WC after a 17-year gap. In 2007, MS Dhoni-led Indian team won the inaugural edition in South Africa, beating Pakistan in an epic final in Johannesburg. Back then, a similar victory parade was held upon the team’s arrival in Mumbai.
