Bayer Leverkusen script history with unbeaten season to lift maiden Bundesliga title

German powerhouse Bayer Leverkusen have scripted history in the Bundesliga after they won their maiden title with an unbeaten season on Saturday (May 18). Needing at least a draw on Saturday at home against Augsburg, Bayer beat their opposite number by 2-1 to claim the title with a historic silver lining. They are now the first and only club in the German top flight to lift the Bundesliga title while going unbeaten throughout the season.

Bayer script history

Star striker Victor Boniface started the day on a high after scoring in the 12th minute to give his side a valuable lead. The lead was doubled before the 30th minute as Robert Andrich scored to give a comfortable lead for the hosts. Bayer would then come close on multiple occasions to add to their lead but Augsburg remained firm and did not give too many chances for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Bayer would pay temporarily for their misses after Mert Komur scored in the 62nd minute to help reduce the lead for Augsburg. However, the visitors failed to find an equaliser which meant Bayer landed a 2-1 win on the final day of the season.

The achievement sees them join the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and Arsenal amongst teams to go unbeaten throughout the season in the top five leagues. Bayer ended the  season Bundesliga season with 90 points in 34 matches, winning 28 matches and drawing six. The win also saw the end of Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign as German champions.

However, they are not done yet as they can still win an invincible treble with DFB Pokal final against Kaiserslautern taking place later in the month. Adding to that will be the Europa League final where they will face Italian side Atalanta. If they win their next two matches, they will record one of the greatest achievements in the history of European football going unbeaten to win three titles in a season.
